What This School Does Well
Elysian is excellent at using its farm setting to help anxious pupils rebuild their confidence and re-engage with learning. Staff develop warm, trusting relationships with pupils and skilfully adapt teaching to each child's emotional and academic needs. The school successfully prepares pupils for their futures by linking learning to real-life farm projects and exploring different career pathways.
Key Strengths
- Uses the farm environment effectively to build pupils' resilience, confidence and anxiety management through caring for animals
- Provides individualised curricula tailored to each pupil's specific learning and therapy needs
- Identifies and addresses gaps in phonics and comprehension skills well in English teaching
- Successfully helps pupils with poor attendance build up regular attendance through understanding their barriers
- Excellent behaviour management and positive relationships between staff and pupils create a calm, respectful learning environment
Areas for Improvement
- Pupils do not have enough opportunities to practise writing and mathematics across other curriculum subjects and around the farm
- Limited integration of writing and maths practice into wider learning areas means pupils do not embed knowledge as well as they could
Safeguarding
Safeguarding arrangements are effective, with the school creating a positive culture that puts pupils' interests first.
Extracurricular Activities
Visits to garden centres and community cafes, trips to explore career pathways including animal-based careers, Pride week celebrations, community volunteering through farm jobs
Elysian is a farm-based special school for pupils aged 11-17 with high levels of anxiety and social, emotional and mental health needs. The school uses its unique farm setting and animal care activities to help pupils rebuild confidence and engagement in learning after periods out of education.
