What This School Does Well

Edgewood School excels at creating a safe, welcoming environment where pupils with complex needs can thrive. Staff build strong individual relationships and use personalised behaviour strategies that really work, helping pupils who have had negative school experiences learn to love learning again. The school puts reading at the centre of everything and teaches important life skills alongside the standard curriculum.

Key Strengths

  • Strong relationships between staff and pupils with consistent kindness and care that help pupils feel safe and happy
  • High expectations for pupil behaviour with effective support strategies that help pupils manage frustration and cope with school demands
  • Reading is placed at the heart of the curriculum with high-quality texts and dedicated phonics sessions helping pupils learn well
  • Personalised curriculum carefully designed around each pupil's EHC plan with clear learning goals and well-matched resources
  • Strong personal development programme teaching life skills, independence and emotional management

Areas for Improvement

  • Some staff lack the knowledge and expertise to teach phonics effectively, which slows reading progress for early readers
  • Occasionally staff provide learning tasks that are not closely matched to pupils' individual targets, causing them to repeat learning they already know
  • Limited opportunities for pupils to learn about different religions and develop understanding of faiths different to their own

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective, with the school creating an open culture that puts pupils' interests first.
