What This School Does Well
East Surrey College creates a supportive, respectful environment where learners develop confidence and skills through excellent teaching and industry partnerships. The college excels at tailoring provision to meet diverse learner needs - from vulnerable young people to adult learners - and directly connects coursework to real-world projects with employers. Staff are highly experienced and invested in learners' success, reflected in strong attendance, positive behaviour, and learners being proud of their achievements.
Key Strengths
- Strong behaviour management with calm, orderly learning environments supported by restorative practices
- Well-structured courses that build learner knowledge progressively, with engaging teaching that uses real-world projects and industry connections
- Effective support for learners with high needs, including accessible technology and tailored strategies
- Strong partnerships with employers to design curriculums that meet local and regional skills gaps
- Dedicated support for vulnerable groups including ex-offenders and armed forces veterans through sector-based work academies
Areas for Improvement
- Inconsistent quality of feedback to learners - some feedback is generic and lacks clarity on how to improve or achieve higher grades
- Low participation in clubs and societies despite a growing range of enrichment activities
- Inconsistent teaching quality in a small number of foundation learning courses for learners with high needs, limiting progress for some students
Safeguarding
Safeguarding is effective - learners feel safe, know how to report concerns confidently, understand local risks including knife crime and county lines, and bullying and discrimination incidents are very infrequent with strong staff responses.
