Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Crowan Primary School has made remarkable progress and creates a warm, caring environment where every child feels supported. The school is relentless about teaching reading well - all Year 1 pupils recently passed their phonics checks. Teachers work hard to plan lessons that build knowledge step-by-step, and pupils are proud to be part of a school with the motto 'dream, believe, achieve'.

Key Strengths

  • Reading is a priority with expert teaching - all Year 1 pupils passed the phonics screening check in 2023 and 2024
  • Strong curriculum design in core subjects with clear knowledge progression from early years onwards
  • Early identification of children with communication and language needs ensures they get timely support
  • Pupils show positive attitudes to learning and feel safe and well looked after
  • Excellent wider development opportunities including residential trips, clubs, and community projects

Areas for Improvement

  • Some subjects have newer curriculum designs where staff are less confident, leading to gaps in pupils' knowledge
  • Pupils make repeated errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation across the curriculum that staff don't always address
  • In newer subject areas, learning tasks don't always build effectively on what pupils already know

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective with school leaders creating an open and positive culture that puts pupils' interests first.

Extracurricular Activities

residential trip to London, gardening club

Crowan Primary School has been transformed since joining Aspire Academy Trust in 2022, moving from inadequate to good across all areas. Pupils flourish in a caring environment where they behave well and are keen to learn.
