Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

City College Plymouth provides excellent preparation for employment through strong partnerships with local employers and extensive work placements. Teachers integrate English and mathematics well into vocational courses, and the college offers particularly strong support for apprentices. Learners consistently develop the skills and attitudes that employers value.

Key Strengths

  • Strong results in GCSE English with significantly more learners achieving high grades than the national average
  • Effective teaching and learning with robust quality assurance procedures
  • Excellent employer partnerships that develop a curriculum matching the city's employment priorities
  • Very good apprenticeship programmes with higher completion rates than national average
  • Good safeguarding arrangements with prompt action on learner concerns

Areas for Improvement

  • Poor attendance at GCSE mathematics lessons resulting in only a third of learners achieving high grades
  • Inconsistent use of work experience logs to help learners reflect on placements
  • Some tutors not holding early enough individual meetings with learners at risk of underachievement
  • Declining success rates in health and social care courses

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective - learners feel safe, managers act promptly on concerns, and the college works closely with external organisations to protect learners from exploitation and radicalisation.

Extracurricular Activities

Work experience placements, enterprise activities, work-related visits

City College Plymouth continues to be judged as good. Learners make good progress on most courses and complete their vocational qualifications successfully, with apprentices making very good progress.
