Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

The school has strong leadership that is focused on improving pupil progress, particularly in reading and writing where pupils are now making accelerated gains. Pupils feel safe and happy in a school with good behaviour and attendance rates above the national average. Teaching assistants provide good support to help all pupils, including those with special educational needs, access their learning.

Key Strengths

  • Leadership is successfully raising pupil attainment and progress, with pupils now making accelerated progress in reading and writing
  • Behaviour and safety are good - pupils feel safe and secure in school
  • The governing body provides effective support and holds leaders accountable
  • Teaching assistants are well used to support pupils who need extra help
  • Pupils have good attendance rates and are keen to learn

Areas for Improvement

  • Teaching quality requires improvement - it has not been consistently good enough to help pupils make steady progress
  • Pupils do not always understand what they are learning or how to improve their work, especially in mathematics
  • Achievement in mathematics is falling behind reading and writing - pupils struggle with mental and written calculation skills
  • Subject leaders do not regularly observe teaching and share good practice to help teachers improve
  • Some work set for pupils is too easy, preventing rapid progress

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective - the school keeps pupils safe and secure through activities such as e-safety training and stranger danger talks, and pupils feel confident reporting bullying to staff.

Christ Church C of E Junior School is a larger than average junior school that requires improvement. The school has experienced staffing challenges but leadership is now taking strong action to raise pupil achievement and improve teaching quality.
