What This School Does Well

Carfield Primary School has made real progress in becoming a stable, welcoming place to learn under new leadership. Your child will benefit from well-behaved classmates who enjoy school, plus a good range of sports and arts clubs to develop their talents. The school is particularly strong at teaching phonics in Year 1.

Key Strengths

  • New headteacher has successfully tackled staffing problems and established stable staffing
  • Effective phonics teaching leading to good outcomes in Year 1
  • Pupils behave well, enjoy school and have good attitudes to learning
  • Curriculum redesigned to better engage pupils with more visits and activities
  • Good range of extra-curricular sports and arts clubs

Areas for Improvement

  • Teaching quality is inconsistent across classrooms and lacks sufficient coaching support
  • Teachers' questioning does not develop pupils' mathematical reasoning well enough
  • Reading skills for academic learning have not been taught effectively enough
  • Middle leaders are new to post and have not yet demonstrated impact
  • Most able pupils in mathematics, especially at upper key stage 2, are not making enough progress

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective with thorough and timely actions, careful monitoring of vulnerable pupils, and strong links with other agencies.

Extracurricular Activities

Sports clubs, arts clubs, lunchtime activities, tournaments, competitions

Carfield Primary School requires improvement overall. The relatively new headteacher has stabilised staffing and improved the learning environment, but teaching quality remains inconsistent and pupils' progress needs to accelerate further.
