Brookfield Primary School excels at raising pupil achievement, with Year 6 results significantly above average in reading, writing and mathematics. The school creates an exciting learning environment through educational visits, clubs and special events, with particular strengths in arts education where pupils work with artists in residence. Teachers have high expectations and provide strong support to help all pupils, including those with additional needs, make good progress.

Key Strengths

  • Standards at the end of Year 6 are significantly above average in reading, writing and mathematics, with some pupils in Years 5 and 6 making outstanding progress
  • Teaching is good with some outstanding teaching, especially in Years 5 and 6, and teachers plan lessons thoroughly with high expectations
  • The school provides exceptional learning opportunities including numerous educational visits, after-school clubs and special events
  • Outstanding opportunities for pupils to excel in the arts, with much displayed artwork of very high quality
  • Senior leaders have successfully raised standards since the previous inspection and the governing body makes a strong contribution to school development

  • Early Years activities are not challenging enough, particularly for developing children's literacy skills
  • Indoor and outdoor learning environments in Nursery and Reception, while good, are not rich and stimulating enough

  • Outstanding teaching in Years 5 and 6 is not being spread to other parts of the school
  • Checks on teaching and learning have not been frequent enough to move teaching from good to outstanding
