What This School Does Well

Brentfield Primary creates a safe and inclusive learning environment where all pupils thrive. The school has successfully closed achievement gaps for disadvantaged pupils and excels at involving parents through meaningful workshops and forums. Strong leadership has driven notable improvements in teaching quality, particularly in the early years, with excellent progress-tracking systems ensuring every child gets targeted support.

Key Strengths

  • Early years children make good and rapid progress with well above national figures achieving a good level of development
  • Phonics achievement and Year 2 reading, writing and mathematics results are at or above national averages, with disadvantaged pupils achieving as well as all pupils nationally
  • Strong safeguarding with comprehensive staff training and pupils feeling safe
  • Excellent parent engagement through workshops, lesson observations and parents' forum
  • Improved teaching quality with new leadership capacity and staff development through coaching and mentoring

Areas for Improvement

  • Key stage 2 reading and writing outcomes are less consistent than mathematics and need acceleration strategies
  • Teacher feedback is inconsistent - not all teachers provide precise guidance for improvement, particularly for the most able pupils in key stage 2
  • Too few children exceed early learning goals despite high achievement at expected level
  • Teachers don't always consolidate and extend writing skills across other subjects or correct handwriting and spelling mistakes
  • Half-termly progress reviews don't identify what teachers need to do differently in lessons to speed up pupil progress

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective with comprehensive staff training on safeguarding duties, radicalisation and extremism awareness, careful recording of all concerns, and pupils demonstrating good understanding of how to stay safe.

Brentfield Primary School continues to be good, with strong leadership maintaining educational quality since the last inspection in 2012. The school has expanded and improved teaching and learning, particularly in early years and lower key stage 2.
