Ofsted Insights

From Ofsted's January 2025 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

Brampton Primary excels at caring for pupils and helping them develop into thoughtful, responsible young people. The phonics teaching is particularly strong, with children who fall behind quickly getting the help they need. The early years is engaging and well-organised, giving children a confident start to school life.

Key Strengths

  • Strong phonics programme that is taught consistently with quick identification of pupils who need extra support
  • Early years provision is well-organised and engaging, with clear learning goals at each stage
  • Excellent personal development and PSHE programme helping pupils understand respect, responsibility and British values
  • Positive pastoral care and relationships between staff and pupils
  • Pupils take on meaningful responsibilities and contribute well to school life

Areas for Improvement

  • Quality of teaching is inconsistent - pupils do not always complete activities that help them think deeply or remember what they learn
  • Reading curriculum beyond phonics is not clearly sequenced, so pupils struggle to build on prior learning
  • Support for pupils with SEND is inconsistent, with unclear small-step targets making it hard to track progress
  • School does not review patterns of behaviour and bullying well enough to know if new policies are working
  • Anti-bullying approach is not consistently understood or applied by all staff

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective, with the school having a strong open culture that puts pupils' interests first.

Extracurricular Activities

School councillors, librarians, mini readers, mini mathematicians, SMILERS mental health team

Brampton Primary School requires improvement overall, though the new leadership team has made significant changes to the curriculum and safeguarding arrangements since September 2023. While pupils receive strong pastoral support and the early years provision is good, inconsistencies in teaching quality mean pupils are not achieving as well as they should.
