What This School Does Well

The school's leadership has shown strong commitment to improvement following the recent inspection. Teachers are receiving support to develop their practice through observing good and outstanding teaching, and the school has strengthened its systems for tracking what each student can do. Governors are actively involved in monitoring the school's progress and the school is working well with partner schools to share and develop effective teaching approaches.

Key Strengths

  • Strong leadership response to identified areas for improvement with accelerated pace of change
  • Improved systems for tracking student attainment and progress
  • Comprehensive professional development programme to improve teaching quality
  • Well-informed governors who regularly visit school and monitor improvement efforts
  • Effective partnerships with Harton Teaching School Alliance providing good practice examples

Areas for Improvement

  • Using tracking information more effectively in lessons to match activities to all pupils' needs
  • Developing the capacity of middle leaders to drive improvement in their areas
  • Continuing to focus action plan on areas for improvement and monitoring impact on pupil progress
  • Raising achievement levels particularly in English, mathematics and science

Boldon School was judged to require improvement in March 2013. This monitoring visit in June 2013 found that the headteacher and senior leaders have responded well to areas for improvement and made a positive start in meeting their improvement aims.
