What This School Does Well

The school has improved pupils' overall attainment and does a good job supporting disadvantaged pupils and those with special educational needs through dedicated staffing and resources. New leadership is working to raise standards across the school. Children in the early years benefit from a good balance of activities that promote engagement and imaginative play.

Key Strengths

  • Pupils' attainment in all subjects at the end of Key Stages 1 and 2 has improved
  • Teaching is good in some classes and pupils supported through pupil premium funding or with special educational needs usually make good progress
  • Pupils enjoy school, get on well together and understand how to keep safe

Areas for Improvement

  • Boys significantly lag behind girls in writing (approximately 11 months behind in Year 6)
  • Not enough consistently good teaching across the school and some inadequate teaching remains
  • Teachers' marking and feedback does not always give clear advice on how pupils can improve
  • Teachers' expectations are sometimes too low and lessons are not challenging enough for more-able pupils
  • Leadership does not focus enough on the underachievement of particular groups like boys and more-able learners

Safeguarding

Pupils understand how to keep safe at school.

Camelot Primary School requires improvement. The school has experienced significant staffing changes and while some pupils make good progress, not enough pupils - particularly boys and more-able learners - are making fast enough progress in writing.
