What This School Does Well
The school has made impressive changes to its behaviour culture, with pupils moving calmly around the school and responding positively to clear expectations. Staff have been well-trained and now feel supported by leaders, which has improved their own well-being. The school's on-site centre for pupils with emotional and mental health needs has been very successful in reducing permanent exclusions.
Key Strengths
- Significantly improved behavioural culture with pupils responding well to clear routines and expectations
- Staff trained in 'kind and consistent' approach to behaviour management resulting in fewer suspensions and more rewards
- On-site Captain Tom Moore Centre providing effective support for pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs
- New leadership appointments increasing school capacity for improvement
- More consistent use of teaching strategies like retrieval tasks and vocabulary development
Areas for Improvement
- Attendance remains a concern with too many pupils still missing too many lessons despite improvements
- Quality of questioning and opportunities for pupils to respond in lessons remain inconsistent
- New system for providing staff with SEND information has only been introduced to one year group so far
- Further work needed to reduce suspensions and improve behaviour at social times
- Need to secure high-quality teaching, monitoring of pupil progress and precise interventions
Safeguarding
The report does not contain a specific safeguarding effectiveness judgment.
Beckfoot Oakbank was judged to have serious weaknesses in January 2025 and this monitoring inspection found that leaders have made progress in improving the school, but more work is necessary to remove the serious weaknesses designation.
