What This School Does Well
The headteacher has made real improvements since joining in 2012, with pupils now making good progress across the school. Reading and writing are particular strengths, with pupils developing confident reading skills and writing for different purposes. The school ensures all pupils, including those learning English as an additional language and those with special needs, are fully included and supported to succeed.
Key Strengths
- Strong and effective leadership by the headteacher has led to improvements in teaching quality and higher standards
- Pupils achieve above average standards in reading and mathematics by the end of Year 6
- Much of the teaching is good with some outstanding lessons, and pupils' behaviour is good and sometimes exemplary
- Pupils who speak English as an additional language, disabled pupils and those with special educational needs make better progress than their peers nationally
- Governors are supportive and challenge the school to continue improving
Areas for Improvement
- Mathematics standards are not yet as high as reading and writing, particularly in Years 3 and 4
- More able pupils in Years 3 and 4 are not always challenged sufficiently in lessons
- A few lessons are not taught well enough and teaching assistants are not always deployed effectively
- Phase and subject leaders need to develop their skills in helping teachers teach consistently well
- Problem-solving tasks in mathematics need to link better to real-life situations
Safeguarding
Safeguarding is effective - pupils have a secure understanding of personal safety and know about different types of bullying including cyber-bullying.
Allfarthing Primary School is a good school where strong leadership has improved teaching quality and raised standards in reading, writing and mathematics. Pupils make good progress and behaviour is good, though the school has declined from its previous Outstanding rating.
